Também designados por "movimentações translacionais", neste tipo de cedência verifica-se o deslizamento mais ou menos rápido de rocha ou de detritos ao longo de um plano pré-existente (em geral planos de estratificação, foliação, diacláses, etc.).
Diferem das movimentações rotacionais ("slumps") principalmente pelo facto da superfície de deslocamento não ser encurvada mas sim plana.
A maior parte dos deslizamentos ocorre porque a tensão tangencial da gravidade e a inclinação dos planos de fraqueza estrutural da rocha têm o mesmo sentido.
O maior deslizamento conhecido é o de Saidmarreh, nas Montanhas de Zagros, no sudoeste do Irão, ocorrido há cerca de 10 mil anos, em que um "bloco" de calcário com 305 m de espessura, 14 km de comprimento e 5 km de largura se destacou do maciço de Kabir kuh e deslizou através do vale de Saidmarreh, com 8 km de largura, tendo inércia suficiente para subir uma elevação com 460 m de altura, tendo parado a cerca de 18 km da origem.
